Post in progress – I will add to this post as I go along and use Workflow Station!
Kingston reached out to me through a mutual acquaintance and asked me if I wanted to test the new “Workflow Station” and I did. Since Lexar sadly killed of their Workflow Hub I have actually been looking for a new solution.
The workflow station has it’s own power supply and a USB-C Gen2 connection which offers great transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps, but do note that the readers only support USB 3.2 Gen 1, which means 5Gbps.
The dock supports up to four Workflow Readers simultaneously. The USB Mini Hub, Sd reader and microSD reader and the 4 bays have regular USB-C connectors, and that means you can use the dock with your smaller portable SSD drives from ex. Lexar and Samsung. They go right in there and appears on you desktop. Very neat! Kingstons says “Compatible with Kingston Workflow Products only.” But that does’nt seem to be true. Prob. means that Kingston won’t guarantee it.
My dock configureation is 2 x dual SD readers, 1 x dual Micro SD reader and one USB miniHub that supports USB-A and USB-C .
I like that the dock sits flat and stable on my desk and has the 4 bays. Like I said above it also supports my pocket sized SSD drives from Lexar and this removes some of the irritation cable mess below my desk. Also like that since I have 2 x dual sd readers I can get several cards ready for import when I get back from a shoot and empty them simultaneously like I can with the Lexar dock.
➡️ Check out the Kingston Workflow Station here and get your own 🛒 amazon or click the picture. By buying from this link you support Filmplusgear at no extra cost for you.
When you buy the Workflow Station you get a Workflow Dock, USB miniHub, USB-C to USB-C cable, power adapter, 4 power adapter country converters, and quick start guide.
The USB 3.2 Gen 1 SD Reader supports UHS-II SD cards and is backwards-compatible with UHS-I SD cards.
The USB 3.2 Gen 1 microSD Reader supports UHS-II microSD cards and is backwards-compatible with UHS-I microSD cards

Last week we went to Copenhagen to shoot our review of the Ronin-S with the Sony FS5. It’s not the typical Ronin-S review, since there are so many out there. It’s a review based on the combination Ronin-S and FS5.
My initial thought’s are wup wup, this is awesome, and great, it actually works with a larger camera like the Sony FS5!
I spend some time testing and trying different scenarios. I wanted to get it to work underslung mode, for tracking shots with feet, bikes etc.
The only way this was possible was with a big battery (I used the SWIT S-8U93) anf the Sony 10-18mm. If you use a heavier lens or a smaller battery, you will have to move the FS5 back, and the EVF will hit the rear motor. I would have liked to try som weights on the back of the FS5, but did’nt have any available.
So I’m getting the Ronin-S for my FS5 and a7SII cameras. Here are some the good and the bad stuff… See the video at the bottom!
The good

]]>
I met the Hedèn guys for the first time last year. It was at IBC 2017. Had never heard about them before. It turned out that Hedèn had been making motion control systems for focus, zoom and aperture since 1964. The company was founded in 1964 by Björn Hedén, who at the time was a Hasselblad employee, working on the legendary Hasselblad 500C. Many of their legendary motors the M26T are still in service and Björn has won a Oscar scientific or technical Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the year 2009, for that exact motor.
Fast forward to 2017. Fujinon comes out with their brilliant Fujinon MK series, with the 18-55 and 50-135mm T2.9 lenses. Hedèn set out to do a motion control system for those lenses, and actually also for the Fujinon Cabrio XK 20-120mm T3.5, and it was preview ready at IBC 2017.
I received a package from Hedèn for test. And I was really exited to test it. I was’nt disappointed one bit.
The system is very compact. There is a control box, a lanc split cable, a power cable with a dtap connector and a zoom bracket. A dual bracket for zoom/or focus is available as an option. Rod mount is coming. More below.
Here are the features for the system, which are key for me:
I have used the system for several different shoots. Commercial, conference and sports. I took it to Austria and tested it in the cold and windy Sölden, to a commercial shoot at an international school in Copenhagen and to a conference.
After having used the system for some weeks I really like it. It’s solid, the speed settings are awesome. You can go snail speed (or almost) or full speed, it’s very easy to set up and when the rod mount comes out it’s usable on more than the Fujinons. I will try to preview that particular option at NAB, so stay tuned. (follow our Facebook page here or our Instagram here).
One last thing… The VLC-1 hardly does’nt use any power. I had it connected to my SWIT 8U93 battery and it’s like I’m only powewring the FS5, even in sub zero temperatures.
Watch the film below for a more visual presentation of the Hedèn VLC-1.

]]>Even with its compact traveling size, it still makes it possible to make 70cm of straight movements. As its big brother, it is also able to make inward and outward curved shots both horizontal and vertically (for vertical shots, a tiltable tripod and ball head is needed) or in-outs and flyovers.
I really liked the Mini C-pan arm for its size and quick operation. So versatile when you dont want to set up a slider. Also some of the movements the Mini C can do, will be hard to do with a regular slider and some impossible, like the curvature moves…
I met Bo Christensen, director of 9.Solutions and designer of the Mini C-Pan arm at IBC 2017, where he showed it to me. See it here…
In the near future I will receive a Mini C-Pan arm for a review in Copenhagen. So stay tuned! You could like our Facebook page here to get notified when the review is out.

]]>Review was updated ultimo october 2016. I like the bag so much that I purchased a second one. This time a special edt. in digital camo.
I’m really not much of a backpack guy. Always thought they were to awkward and unhandy to use. So when Lowepro approached me and asked if I wanted to try the new Lowepro ProTactic 450AW I was like… “naaaah!” But that would soon change to a “WHAAAAT? This is nice!”
Back in the “old” days backpacks were uncomfortable and you had to take them off to get to your gear. Those days are over with the Lowepro ProTactic 450AW.
Since I work with the Sony a7S and R plus the a6000, I can actually fit 3 cameras in the backpack. That’s really nice. I took it out a couple of times last week to test it, and Saturday it was wedding time. I had a shoot in the center of Copenhagen and I decided to use the bag there. No regrets regarding that decision.
Come wedding day I had packed following in the bag:

The bag is really versatile. In the old days there was one opening and that was in the front. The Lowepro ProTactic 450AW has 4 openings. 1 in the top, one on either side and finally the back. The flexibility is great and adapt to your shooting style and the way you pack your bag.
Here is what I like best:
It’s nice and comfortable to wear. Even at 25 degrees celsius my back did’nt get to hot, due to the ActivZone harness, which provides ventilation and targeted comfort for support when walking around. It sits nicely on my back and feels nice and weight distributed.
I can definitely recommend it! It’s great for photographers doing a lot of walking. Like me at weddings, when walking around with bride and groom.
Below are some more pictures of the Lowepro ProTactic 450AW backpack.

Sony’s a7 and a6000 or similar series does suffer when it comes to batterylife of the NP-FW50 batteries. When I shoot with either my a7S and my a6000, I do carry plenty of batteries. They seem to last about an hour, which is NOT very good. The battery grip for the a7S (VG-C1EM) does double the batterylife, but also adds quite a lot in size and is not good when shooting on a rig.
I have a solution (Thanks for the tip Simon Conroy from Amberfilm) which will power your a7S or a6000 for +5 hours straight.
It’s the Ex-pro 7600 mAh battery with a dedicated Sony FW-50 battery adapter with a spiral kabel (1 m when stretched).

I have stresstested it and can sy it will definately hold op for +5 hours in normal shooting conditions. It’s light and feels very sturdy.
It comes with a case and 1 adapter with a battery dummy which slides right in and replaces the regular battery. The cable has a spiral cord and it fits nicely through the lillte latch in the battery door of the Sony a7s or the a6000 cameras.

Picture number 7 (right hand side of this page) shows the Ex-Pro® Sony On-The-Move 7600mAh Rechargeable Battery Power System with my a7S and the CYP-4KS scaler hooked up to it.
Conclusion: this battery pack comes heavily recommended and there is no doubt that I will purchase a couple more, to have as spares in the bag or for days with longer shooting hours.
